Ancylostomiasis in Children

​

ancylostomiasis or a hookworm disease is an infestation of the small intestine caused by Ancylostoma duodenale or Necator americanus.
 

Diagnostic Criteria

 

  • Iron deficiency anaemia

  • Plus stool microscopic evidence of Ancylostoma duodenale or Necator americanus


Investigation

 

  • Stool Analysis for Ancylostoma duodenale or Necator americanus ova.


Treatment


Pharmacological treatment

​

  • Give Albendazole 200mg single dose (children below 2years), 400mg PO for older children OR

  • Give Mebendazole PO 500 mg as a single dose (children above 1 year)

 

Note:

 

  • Give ferrous sulphate (3-6mg/kg of elemental iron) once daily for 3months

​
