Ancylostomiasis in Children
​
ancylostomiasis or a hookworm disease is an infestation of the small intestine caused by Ancylostoma duodenale or Necator americanus.
Diagnostic Criteria
-
Iron deficiency anaemia
-
Plus stool microscopic evidence of Ancylostoma duodenale or Necator americanus
Investigation
-
Stool Analysis for Ancylostoma duodenale or Necator americanus ova.
Treatment
Pharmacological treatment

Give Albendazole 200mg single dose (children below 2years), 400mg PO for older children OR
-
Give Mebendazole PO 500 mg as a single dose (children above 1 year)
Note:
-
Give ferrous sulphate (3-6mg/kg of elemental iron) once daily for 3months
