Cardiomyopathy in Children


Disease of the heart muscle causing dilatation and/or impaired contraction. There are three types: hypertrophic, dilated and restrictive cardiomyopathy.
 

Diagnostic Criteria
 

  • Angina

  • Features of heart failure in severe cases


Investigations
 

  • ECG

  • Chest X ray

  • Echocardiogram

  • Cardiac catheterization

  • CT

  • Angiogram


Treatment


For Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy


Non Pharmacological treatment

  • Avoid strenuous exercises

Pharmacological treatment

​

  • Give Propranolol PO 2 mg/kg 6 hourly OR

  • Atenolol PO 1mg/kg once per day.

​

Dilated and Restrictive cardiomyopathy
 

Non Pharmacological treatment
 

  • Bed rest.

​

Pharmacological treatment
 

  • Give Digoxin AND

  • Frusemide and Spironolactone dose as above
