Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)

CPR is indicated in children with cardiac arrest. For older children a change to CA- B is currently recommended. * For the newborn the A-B-C (Airway, Breathing, Chest compressions) sequence should be retained

Standard Techniques for CPR

Infants

There are two techniques which are Two-finger and Two-thumb-encircling,

  • Two Finger technique - please click the picture no 2 on top

  • Two thumb technique as shown in picture no 1 above

Children aged 1 to 8 years

  • One hand compression technique- click to view picture no 3 above

The heel of one hand placed over the sternum at the nipple line in children and one finger breath below the nipple line in infants. Push hard and fast.

  • Push hard: Compress the chest 1/3 to ½ the Depth of the chest.

  • Push fast: Compress at a rate of 100 compression per min.

Ventilation to compression ratios for infant and child CPR:

  • One rescuer: 30:2.

  • Two-rescuer: 15:2.

Allow complete recoil of the chest in order to allow the heart to refill with blood before the next compression.

Minimize interruption of chest compression; perform uninterrupted CPR in 2- min intervals before reassessing the patient.
