Giardiasis

​

Infestation of the small intestine, caused by the flagellate protozoa Giardia lamblia (or G.intestinalis).

Diagnostic Criteria

 

• Watery diarrhoea with flatulence

• Plus stool microscopic evidence of G. lamblia

Investigation:

​

• Stool analysis for Giardia lamblia

​

Treatment:

 

• Give Metronidazole PO 7.5 mg/kg 8 hourly for 5 days OR

• Give Tinidazole PO 60 mg/kg once a day for 3 days OR

• Give Secnidazole PO 30 mg/kg stat
