Schistosomiasis in Children
Parasitic disease affecting the urinary and GIT systems caused by blood flukes (trematodes) of the genus Schistosoma. Common species found in Tanzania are S.haematobium responsible for urogenital Schistosomiasis and S.mansoni responsible for intestinal Schistosomiasis.
Diagnostic Criteria
S. Mansoni

Abdominal pain and frequent blood stained stool

Evidence of S. mansoni ova in stool
S. haematobium

Painless terminal hematuria

Plus evidence of S. haematobium ova in urine

Treatment
Pharmacological treatment

Give Praziquantel PO 40mg/kg single dose for children over 4 years.
