Septicemia in children

​

This is a severe blood stream infection associated with toxaemia manifesting with target organ dysfunction.
 

Diagnostic Criteria


Fever or hypothermia with;

​

  • General danger signs

  • Signs of septic shock

  • Target organ dysfunction (DIC, AKI, encephalopathy, hepatic dysfunction)

 

Investigations


Perform septic screen including but not limited to

  • Blood for culture and sensitivity

  • Urinalysis

  • Urine culture

  • FBP

  • Renal function tests

  • Liver function tests

  • CRP


Treatments


Non Pharmacological Treatment

 

  • Encourage breastfeeding and ensure adequate fluid and calorie intake.

  • Give Oxygen 1-2L/min


Pharmacological Treatment

 

  • Cloxacillin IV 50mg/kg 6 hourly if Staphylococcal infection is suspected.egday for 10 days ADD Give Ampicillin IV 50mg/kg 6 hourly and Gentamicin IV 7.5mg/kg once a  presence of impetigo or abscess

  •  Give Paracetamol PO 15mg/kg if high fever (temperature ≥38.5°C)

 

Note:
 

If no improvement give specific antibiotics depending on culture and sensitivity pattern
